In 1987, the young Yugoslavian soccer team became international stars by winning the Junior World Soccer Championships in Chile. Many now play in top clubs across Europe. But Yugoslavia itself no longer exists. Director Vuk Janic interviews these soccer heroes, including Zvonimir Boban and Sinisa Mihajlovic, and revisits the neighborhoods where they grew up. Through their story, he explores the breakup of their homeland. The 1990 supporter riots during a game between Red Star Belgrade and Dinamo Zagreb foreshadowed the coming war. Soon after, the team fractured. Seven years later, representing Croatia and a fragmented Yugoslavia, they compete in crucial matches for the 2000 European Championships. Though soccer isn't war, the conflict is always present. The first game in Belgrade is canceled due to NATO bombings, and the national anthems are met with hostile jeers.
