Description:
Chernivtsi is a city in central Europe, formerly the capital of Bukowina under the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It was a place where Ukrainians, Romanians, Germans, Poles, and Hutsuls lived together, representing diverse nationalities, languages, and cultures. At its peak, the city's population of 150,000 included nearly half Jewish. Today, the southern part of Bukowina is Romania, while Chernivtsi itself is in Ukraine. Six years ago, Volker Schlöndorff filmed there, and this year he returns with emigrants and their descendants.
