Description:
Go Takamine's debut film is a significant work in Okinawan cinema, largely shot in the Okinawan dialect. Set just before Japan regains control of Okinawa, the movie subtly explores the island's history of being occupied and the resulting sense of displacement through the story of a close-knit community preparing for a wedding between a local woman and a Japanese teacher. On the sidelines is Reishu (Kaoru Kobayashi), who leaves his job at a US military base and spends his newfound time collecting snakes and playing with ants – while also getting the bride pregnant. Takamine's slow-moving film features distinctive Okinawan elements, blending aspects of the island's folklore, all underscored by Haruomi Hosono’s minimalist and evocative music.
