Description:
In August 1991, a failed coup by hardline communists in Moscow brought an end to 70 years of Soviet rule. The USSR quickly dissolved, and the Russian Federation's flag replaced the Soviet one over the Kremlin. As President Gorbachev was held captive, the coup leaders broadcast Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" on state media, disrupting news. In Moscow, protestors gathered around the White House, ready to defend democratic opposition led by Boris Yeltsin. Meanwhile, thousands of confused, frightened, and hopeful people flooded the streets of Leningrad, eager to participate in what they believed would reshape their future.
