The Basis of Make-Up III (2005)

The film presents thirty-eight notebooks and sketchbooks by Heinz Emigholz, created between 1996 and 2004. These are cinematic studies focusing on marble inlays in the Johannes Cathedral in Valletta, Malta (2004); Skull Rock in Joshua Tree Desert, California, which inspired the series' title; Cerro Castellan in Big Bend National Park, Texas; a rock shop in Quartzsite, Arizona selling glass factory remnants as "gems from Mexico"; scenes from Bartlesville, Oklahoma; a tree adorned with shoes on Highway 62 in California (2002); and various spaces within Gabriele D'Annunzio's Villa Cargnacco in Gardone, Italy (1997), including the mask merchant's room, reliquary room, workshop, globe room, Apollinian veranda, the room of the Cheli, and the Zambracca.
