The film tells the story of those who continued to fight after the end of the Spanish Civil War. These were Republicans who retreated to the mountains, mainly in northern Spain between Asturias and León. They were known as "maquis" and fought for a Spain free from General Franco's fascism, who seized power during a brutal civil war. The story focuses on Ramiro, Santiago, and Gildo. Santiago and Gildo are killed, and Ramiro eventually decides to flee to France, disillusioned by the isolation imposed by democratic governments in Europe, which allowed General Franco to remain in power despite the Republican government elected by the Spanish people, not by force.
