Inspired by a poem by Marie Jacobs, the animated short *55 Socks*, from Oscar-winning director Co Hoedeman, honors the resourcefulness of the Dutch during the harsh winter of 1944-45, a time of famine under Nazi occupation. As the war nears its end, several women carefully unravel a bedspread to knit 55 socks, intending to trade them for food. Hoedeman draws on his own childhood memories to create this simple yet profoundly beautiful and poetic film.
