Early Days chronicles the formative years of celebrated Czech writer Alois Jirásek. Even as a grammar school student in Broumov, Jirásek had already formed his own perspective on Czech history. Appointed as a substitute teacher in Litomyšl, he's already published a book and several poems. Local leaders eagerly anticipate his arrival. However, Jirásek is disgusted by their superficial patriotism and quickly becomes unpopular. The district sheriff attempts to remove him from the school and the town. When that fails, the sheriff installs an anti-Czech headmaster who tries to undermine Jirásek. The students rally to Jirásek's defense, and his discontent resonates not only in Litomyšl but across Bohemia.
