Description:
In 1914, Robert Ross (Brent Carver) leads a sheltered life in a wealthy Toronto suburb. Secretive and isolated, he confides only in his mentally disabled sister, Rowena (Anne-Marie MacDonald). He feels sympathy for his emotionally distant father and avoids his domineering mother, whose resentment towards Rowena has grown. Rowena is the focus of Robert's imaginative world. Her death prompts a confrontation with his family, leading him to decide to forge his own path. He enlists in the Canadian army, training in Alberta and Montreal before being deployed to England and France. The war becomes a new arena for Robert to confront his inner turmoil and unresolved conflicts.
