After discovering the fountain of youth, Ponce de León drinks and achieves immortality in his final moments. He becomes an eternally 80-year-old Spaniard, destined to witness centuries of change: coral reefs becoming mangroves, swamps being drained and cities built, buildings crumbling and swamps returning. For Ponce de León, immortality presents a profound dilemma – time is constant, unavoidable, and his struggle is to either stop it altogether or accelerate its passage. He views time as a problem of the body, believing escape from his physical form is the only way to escape time itself.
