Description:
Portugal presented an unusual situation to Europe with D. Afonso VI, the son of D. João de Bragança, ruling as an insane man. His wife, daughter of the Duke of Nemours and relative of Louis XIV, plotted to remove him from power. The king's mental state fueled the queen's boldness. Despite his physical strength and a long marriage, she accused him of impotence. Marie Françoise cleverly gained control in the kingdom. She had him imprisoned in November 1667 and quickly secured a papal decree confirming her virginity and legitimizing her marriage to her brother-in-law, Pedro. Portugal's submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1990.
