Description:
Joshua Oppenheimer juxtaposes images of retirement community life, gleaned from television commercials, with a talk radio interview featuring a female convict who praises her experience on Sheriff Joe Arpaio's chain gang. The film presents two opposing types of salesmanship. Oppenheimer disrupts the glossy idealism of the commercials through video distortion and electronic interference, cutting and splicing both video and audio to create a disturbing disconnect between the chain gang prisoner’s stark reflections on life and death and the commercials’ promises of an idyllic existence. Following in the vein of *A Brief History of Paradise as Told by the Cockroaches* and *Market Update*, the film critiques consumerism as a deceptive illusion.
