Description:

Set in a rural village near Kyoto, *A Fond Face from the Past* is a poignant short film, clocking in at thirty-six minutes. It’s arguably Naruse's most powerful portrayal of the era's militaristic constraints, directly confronting the culture of war. The arrival of a newsreel featuring a local man named Yoichi generates excitement throughout the community and his family. The newsreel includes footage of Yoichi's mother, and opens with the same marching music as Naruse’s own film, followed by a curious segment about Japanese babies in Los Angeles. Released in January 1941, nearly a year before the Pacific War, this "found footage" reveals Japan's imperial ambitions extending far beyond Asia long before Pearl Harbor.
