Description:
This one-hour program follows a team of scientists determined to demonstrate the potential for a catastrophic asteroid impact. On June 14, 2002, an asteroid the size of a football field made a close approach to Earth, traveling at over 10 kilometers per second. It passed within 120,000 kilometers – less than a third of the distance to the Moon – undetected. A direct hit could have caused devastation comparable to the 1908 Tunguska event in Siberia, which flattened 2000 square kilometers of forest. Impacting a major city like Moscow or Hong Kong would have resulted in immense loss of life. The program details the scientists' efforts to prove this possibility.
