For his project, Palindrome, Frampton chose these images, describing them as having a biological, abstract quality like surrealist paintings. He then imposes a strict palindromic structure on them: a motorized sequence built from twelve variations on forty phrases. This approach highlights Frampton's interest in using rules and principles to create films, contrasting with purely expressive aesthetics.
