The Oil Merchant’s Wife (2009)

Director Sakagami Shinobu presents a new film based on the classic puppet theater work of Chikamatsu Monzaemon, a story frequently adapted for the screen. This version centers on a woman with a small role in the original, and features a notable performance by former model Fujikawa Nozomi. Yohee (Yasuda Shingo), the heir to the family business Kawachiya, accumulates substantial debts due to his infatuation with the prostitute Okiku (Fujikawa). Told by her husband Chizaemon, Okiku goes to confront Yohee. On her journey home, Okiku's laughter and mockery evoke a powerful, sexual response in Okichi (Yamada Kinuwo).
