Sector Sarajevo (2013)

In May 1992, Serbian forces besieged Sarajevo, Bosnia's capital, subjecting the largely Muslim civilian population to widespread terror. By July, the city's sole connection to the outside world, Sarajevo Airport, was secured by the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR). Led by a Canadian general, 800 Canadian peacekeepers employed assertive methods to deliver vital humanitarian aid during a fierce civil war. Over the following three years of siege, the Canadian soldiers played a crucial role in saving thousands of lives and initiating the Bosnian peace process during the conflict's critical early months.
