Raising Shrimp (2013)

The shrimp we eat most often in America is actually a low-cost import. *Raising Shrimp* explores the economic and health risks of relying on outsourced food. The film follows Ted, an engineer, and Andy, an ecologist, as they search for a better way to raise shrimp. In Texas, they discover local fishermen struggling as imports undercut their business. In Belize, shrimp farmers attempt to balance sustainable practices with the pressures of globalization, but even their best efforts fail. Back in the U.S., innovative farmers are using bacteria to cultivate shrimp in controlled indoor environments with minimal waste. Inspired, Andy and Ted realize this method could offer a solution for everyone.
