Description:
This black and white film blends archival footage and photographs with a narrative to depict the world of high-society gay men during the Harlem Renaissance. The story unfolds around a wake, where mourners gather near a coffin, and an elegant downstairs bar buzzes with tuxedoed men dancing and conversing. A man experiences a dream encounter with a woman he's drawn to, only to find her asleep beside him upon waking. His experiences at jazz clubs and dance halls are interwoven with readings from the poetry and essays of Hughes and other writers. The film subtly celebrates the freedom and visibility of gay Black men in 1920s Harlem through visual storytelling, rarely resorting to explicit depictions.
