Description:

Fragments presents rare glimpses into lost cinematic history. The program features the final scene from John Ford's 1922 film, The Village Blacksmith, and a performance by Emil Jannings in the Oscar-winning, yet lost, 1927 film, The Way of All Flesh. Additional clips include segments from lost films like Cleopatra (1917) starring Theda Bara, The Miracle Man (1919) with Lon Chaney, He Comes Up Smiling (1918) starring Douglas Fairbanks, the early Technicolor film Gold Diggers of Broadway (1929), and the only color footage of silent star Clara Bow in Red Hair (1928). The program also includes interviews with film preservationists who worked to identify and restore these films. Finally, Diana Serra Cary, known as "Baby Peggy," discusses a featured fragment from Darling of New York (1923), offering insight into the silent era's child stars.
