Description:
The Herlihys are a working-class Chicago family with three children who choose very different lives: Brian enlists in the Marines and fights in Vietnam, Michael becomes active in the civil rights movement, campaigning for Bobby Kennedy and Eugene McCarthy before embracing radical politics, and Katie becomes pregnant, moves to San Francisco, and joins a hippie commune. Simultaneously, the Taylors are an African-American family in the American South. After Willie Taylor, a minister and civil rights activist, is murdered, his son Emmet relocates to the city and eventually joins the Black Panthers, working as a bodyguard for Fred Hampton.
