Description:
Schroeter's Macbeth is a unique television production that blends Shakespeare's tragedy with Verdi's opera. Shot entirely in a studio using multiple cameras, the film features a specially arranged score for violin, accordion, piano, and oboe, with rhythms inspired by Argentinian tango and bolero. The actors deliver singing with intensely shrill voices, set against extraordinary colors achieved through innovative video techniques. According to MoMA, Schroeter considered Macbeth his most controversial work, acknowledging audiences' resistance to this unconventional adaptation of Shakespeare, while maintaining his personal indifference to distinctions between kitsch and high culture.
