Description:
*A Deusa Negra* is a love story that unfolds across two centuries. In 18th century Yorubaland, Prince Oluyole is captured during a war fueled by European slave traders and sold into slavery in Brazil. In modern-day Nigeria, Babatunde makes a promise to his dying father: he will journey to Brazil to find remnants of their ancestors who were once enslaved. His trip begins with a Candomblé ritual, leading him deeper into the culture and, in a dreamlike sequence, offering insight into the suffering and resilience of his forebears. The film seamlessly blends past and present, reality and the mystical, and conversation with trance. A hypnotic atmosphere is created by the music of Nigerian drummer Remi Kabaka, who uses repetitive and distorted rhythms.
