Description:
The story of an Austrian man echoes the ascent of Hitler. Wounded in World War I, Klaus Schneider recovers under the care of Dr. Emil Bettleheim, who discovers Schneider possesses extraordinary empathy and clairvoyance – abilities that could help those contemplating suicide. After the war, with a friend as his manager and a lover by his side, Schneider renames himself Eric Jan Hanussen and travels to Berlin, performing as a hypnotist and clairvoyant in theaters and halls. His unwavering honesty catches the attention of powerful Nazis. He foretells their rise to power (beneficial for their propaganda) and their acts of violence (less so). Haunted by pain and facing danger, what becomes of Hanussen?
