Description:
Lost among the jungles of Central America and Mexico lie the ruins of great cities. Who built them? It took over a century and two remarkable individuals to unlock the secrets of the ancient Maya. American John Lloyd Stephens and his English companion Frederick Catherwood began the first of two journeys to Central America in 1839. Overcoming dangers and illness, they returned with incredible tales and stunning images from a once-powerful civilization. A hundred years later, Mayan archaeology had progressed significantly, though the inscriptions on the ruins remained largely undeciphered. It was the groundbreaking work of Tatiana Proskouriakoff, a woman pioneering in a male-dominated field, that finally revealed the true lives of the Maya to the world.
