I remember two movies from my childhood about boys who were returned to their families after being away for years. One spent time on a space station, the other was kidnapped and abused. Both boys struggled to readjust and were fundamentally changed by their experiences. I often compare these films – one a comedy, the other a tragedy – as exploring a quietly spiritual theme. "Getting Stronger Every Day" features these stories, presenting them as almost magical elements within the storyteller's life. Elsewhere in the film, actual mystical objects appear without any backstory. It makes me consider how these different aspects of reality – real life, stories, the material world, spirit, video, drawings – can interact.
