Description:
In 18th-century Jutland, farmer Mikkel wants his daughter Cecil to marry the wealthy Mads Egelund, but Cecil loves Esben, a haberdasher. Mads proposes, but Cecil doesn't give a clear answer. Esben then departs for business, and Cecil promises to wait for him. Years later, after an attempt to force Cecil to marry Mads, she descends into madness. When Esben returns home prosperous, Cecil doesn't recognize him and, in a fit of madness, kills him. After regaining her sanity, Cecil doesn't remember the event and continues to await Esben. Mads visits and, after another rejection of his proposal, reveals the truth to Cecil, causing her to lapse back into insanity.
