Description:
On Baron de Wilde's estate, farmer Van Paemel struggles to keep his family together. His life is upended when his son Désire is accidentally shot during a hunt, leaving him permanently disabled. Meanwhile, his eldest son Eduard is active in the city's socialist movement and labor strikes. Defying her father, Cordule begins a forbidden affair with a poacher. Romanie, the youngest, becomes pregnant after being seduced by the Baron's heir while working as a servant at the castle. With the youngest son drafted into the army, the family faces a severe labor shortage on the farm and is ultimately evicted for failing to pay rent. Facing hardship, three children emigrate to the USA, one joins a convent, and one passes away, leaving only Van Paemel and his wife.
