The 1994 Toronto International Film Festival premiere of Jill Godmilow’s film *Roy Cohn/Jack Smith* occurred during a period of unprecedented AIDS-related deaths in the U.S. (over 270,000). In New York City, the heart of the AIDS crisis, many artists and filmmakers were confronting the disease. As Tony Kushner's acclaimed play *Angels in America* ran on Broadway, audiences downtown remembered Ron Vawter’s one-man show, *Roy Cohn/Jack Smith*. Vawter, who died of AIDS in April 1994, performed two monologues: first as Roy Cohn, the conservative lawyer, and then as Jack Smith, the flamboyant filmmaker—both figures who died from AIDS-related illnesses in the late 1980s.
