Description:
In British-ruled India, a father resolves to make his son, Narayan, known as Nani, a celibate to atone for the loss of five other children. He sends the eleven-year-old Nani to a secluded village in Karnataka, South India, to be cared for by the respected Archarya, Udup Pandit. There, Nani meets two other students of the Archarya, as well as the Archarya's widowed daughter, Yamuna, and Shrikar Upadhyay, who also teaches the British Hindi. When the Archarya returns after a few days, everything has changed. His daughter is pregnant, the villagers plan to banish her, and they are angry with the Archarya for allowing Yamuna to deviate from the traditional life of a Hindu widow.
