Description:
"La Zerda and the Songs of Oblivion" (1982) is one of only two films by Algerian novelist Assia Djebar. This powerful poetic essay, based on historical records, deconstructs French colonial propaganda from Pathé-Gaumont newsreels made between 1912 and 1942. In collaboration with poet Malek Alloula and composer Ahmed Essyad, Djebar reveals signs of revolt among the North African population under colonial rule. By reassembling these images, Djebar uncovers the history of Zerda ceremonies, suggesting their power and mysticism were suppressed by colonial exploitation. The film subverts the colonial gaze, revealing a hidden tradition of resistance and struggle, challenging exoticism and orientalism.
