Description:
Žemla Martin (Francis Smolik) finally opens his dream shop and quickly gains many acquaintances, particularly the former captain Kylliján (Vlasta Burian), who frequently visits to drink brandy, play peas, and talk nonsense. Žemla's debts steadily increase. He later marries the manipulative Pavlina Šustrová (Ela Poznerová), who is also joined by her calculating mother, widow Catherine Šustrová (Antonie Nedošínská). The two women and Kylliján exploit him, though they appear friendly on the surface. Žemla's world crumbles when he discovers his wife is unfaithful and that the shop is bankrupt. In a final act of desperation, his best friend, Captain Kylliján, happily drinks away Žemla’s debts.
