Description:

This epic film chronicles the founding of the First Bulgarian Kingdom and the rise of its first ruler, Khan Asparuh. It’s the first installment in a trilogy exploring the events leading up to the establishment of the Bulgarian state in the mid-7th century. Volga Bulgaria is under pressure from the Khazars, prompting Asparuh, the youngest son of Khan Kubrat, to lead his tribes in a twenty-year search for a new homeland. Guided by the captured Byzantine chronicler Belisarius, Asparuh finally reaches the Danube River's mouth. The film depicts the Bulgarians’ struggle to conquer land south of the Danube and build their new nation.
