The Silent Pacific (1984)

Digna Sinke's debut film follows Marian (Josee Ruiter), a journalist returning home from Latin America after her father's death. She discovers her husband, whom she married for political gain, may be deported for not living with her. Adding to her troubles, Marian is determined to take her mentally handicapped brother out of an institution, but the move proves disastrous for both of them. Haunted by a past tragedy from her time in Latin America, Marian struggles with overwhelming depression, coloring all her actions. The film presents a relentlessly bleak portrait of a woman burdened by inescapable despair.
