Description:
In 1833, as the new Belgian kingdom worries about a potential Dutch invasion, young men are chosen randomly each year to serve in the army. This stark, yet timeless story by Hendrik Conscience, considered the father of Flemish literature, follows Jan Braems, a poor and innocent farmer. He sells his chance to avoid military service to a wealthy family for a large sum of money. Army life proves even tougher than farm work, especially for Jan, who speaks Dutch while his superiors speak French. His rebellious spirit leads him into trouble, including gambling away his money and contracting a sexually transmitted disease. When his girlfriend searches for him, her life is also put at risk.
