Description:
Set at the end of the 19th century, the film follows Cardinal Guglielmo Massaia as he returns to Italy after twenty years spent in Ethiopia attempting to convert the local population to Catholicism. He seeks support from the Piedmontese government, but Count Cavour, while acknowledging the Cardinal's work, cannot secure official backing for his plans. Trusting in divine guidance, the Cardinal returns to Ethiopia independently and befriends King Menelik, whose support is crucial for spreading his faith and fulfilling his mission. The head of the Coptic Church, Abuna Attanasio, actively works to thwart Massaia's efforts and have him exiled. However, Menelik refuses to assist Attanasio, leading the latter to appeal directly to the Emperor, sparking a war between Menelik and his own people. To resolve the conflict, the Cardinal decides to leave Africa.
