Description:
Messolonghi, a historic coastal town in western Greece, endured a five-year siege (1821-1826) during the Turkish occupation, culminating in a heroic and tragic exodus. Witnesses recall gypsy drummers bolstering the townspeople's spirits during the fight against the Turkish forces. Today, locals and gypsies continue to live together peacefully, a harmony celebrated annually during the feast of Saint Symeon. Each Pentecost, they hold a five-day Dionysian celebration, organized and participated in by both communities. Gypsy musicians provide the music throughout the festival, creating an intense atmosphere that transcends social divisions.
