APPROACHING THE ELEPHANT is a documentary following The Teddy McArdle Free School, a school where classes are optional and students vote on the rules. Founded 90 years ago by A. S. Neill, Summerhill was the first free school, and now over 200 exist globally. The film covers two years at Teddy McArdle, from its beginning with no rules or classes, through a change in leadership and a student's expulsion decided by the students themselves, to the end of the second year. APPROACHING THE ELEPHANT offers an intimate look at a diverse group of people working together to create a school where children are treated as equals and free to choose how they spend their time.
