Description:
On September 29, 1945, a preliminary version of a powerful documentary about concentration camps was shown at the Ministry of Information in London. For five months, Sidney Bernstein led a small team—including Stewart McAllister, Richard Crossman, and Alfred Hitchcock—to assemble the film from hours of harrowing footage. This ambitious Allied project, intended to expose the Nazi regime and encourage acceptance of Allied rule in Germany, arrived at a time when its impact was limited. Even in its unfinished state (available since 1984), the film deeply affected audiences. Now fully restored and presented as a six-reel version by the Imperial War Museums, it is being hailed as comparable to Alain Resnais’ *Night and Fog* (1955).
