"ABC of a Strike" documents the 1979 metalworkers' strikes that took place outside São Paulo. The footage remained largely unseen until after director Leon Hirszman's death in 1987, when its significance became clearer. The compelling film details the negotiations between labor unions and factory management, and chronicles the origins of the region’s Worker’s Party and the rise of its prominent leader, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Having risen from extreme poverty, Lula gained national attention as a union activist in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Following a period of imprisonment for his union activities, he later became Brazil’s president from 2003 to 2010.
