Description:
This story, originally written in 1982 and previously unpublished, begins with the death of Lucja Krol's husband under a tram. Shortly after, she gives birth to her fourth son in their new apartment. They befriend their neighbor Wiktor, a communist intellectual, but his life takes a turn when he is arrested and imprisoned. Flashbacks reveal Lucja’s wartime escape from a Nazi black market roundup. Later, her sons host Communist meetings in their apartment, with her support. Despite hardship, Lucja works tirelessly without complaint. After the war, her son Klemens is wrongly accused of collaboration and arrested. Wiktor, now a powerful party member, attempts to help him but suffers a downfall in the process. Klemens is tortured and dies in prison, remaining loyal to Communism until the end. Lucja is never informed of his death.
