Description:
In 1964, concert pianist Leon Fleisher was at the height of his career. A small injury – a cut to his right thumb – triggered dystonia, causing his right hand's ring and little fingers to curl involuntarily. Fleisher recounts in recent interviews the aftermath: a broken marriage, periods of despair and disappointment, a 1983 surgery that offered a brief return to performing, and ultimately, with Botox and Rolfing, regaining the ability to play with both hands. Throughout this journey, Fleisher finds new passions: conducting, teaching, and performing compositions written for a World War I veteran who had lost the use of one hand.
