"Never Give Up: The 20th Century Odyssey of Herbert Zipper" is a 1995 documentary film by Terry Sanders, with Freida Lee Mock co-producing. The film tells the remarkable story of Herbert Zipper, a musician and conductor born in Vienna who survived multiple concentration camps – Dachau, Buchenwald, and a Japanese camp – to become a renowned music educator. Even at 92, he continues his mission of bringing music to inner-city schools in America. While imprisoned in Dachau, Zipper secretly organized concerts using improvised instruments, discovering the vital importance of music and art for survival. For much of the 20th century, he championed the inclusion of professional orchestras in American inner-city education. The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Short at the 68th Academy Awards in 1996.
