Jamie Shovlin's debut film, Rough Cut, centers on the creation of a fictional 1970s exploitation movie called Hiker Meat. The film follows a classic slasher story: a hitchhiking woman, a charismatic commune leader, and a group of teenagers who are stalked and killed. Rough Cut explores both the deconstruction and celebration of this often-criticized genre. Shovlin developed a complete screenplay, score, and prototype for Hiker Meat, filming key scenes and a trailer in the Lake District in 2013. The film contrasts these scenes with behind-the-scenes footage and insights into the development of Hiker Meat's script, music, and visuals, resulting in a self-aware blend of filmmaking process and classic slasher elements.
