Description:
Automata is a darkly humorous film about Henry, the last of a family of duck hunters. It explores the relationship between hunter and hunted, and the consuming nature of obsession when a species faces extinction. The film asks: what happens when someone is directly responsible for driving an entire species to extinction? Set against the backdrop of Australia's controversial duck hunting season, where hunters and protesters frequently clash, Automata employs an experimental approach with minimal dialogue and a non-linear story structure, complemented by a score by Belgian sound designer Christina Clar. Unusually, much of the sound design was completed before the film was edited in Australia, reversing typical production flow. Final sound post-production took place in Brussels and features recordings from remote caves.
