Description:

Calling the Tune explores the early days of the gramophone industry and its struggles to develop dependable recording and production techniques. Record label owner Mr. Gordon (Sam Livesey) confidently declares the gramophone will be the future of entertainment, but faces consequences for unethical tactics against his competitors. While the film's romance is secondary, the main draw is witnessing prominent performers like Henry Wood and his orchestra, George Robey, and Charles 'the laughing policeman' Penrose recording directly onto discs. A surprisingly advanced prototype of laser disc also features prominently.
