Description:
This animated short film, an Academy Award nominee for Best Short Subject (Cartoons), tells the story of John Henry, the famous American folklore hero. He takes a job working for the C&O Railroad, but his work is soon threatened by the arrival of a new machine, the Inky-Poo, which can drive steel. John Henry challenges the machine, arguing that human ingenuity will triumph over automation. Can he win the race? Recognized for its cultural and historical importance, this film was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry in 2015. It was preserved by the Academy Film Archive in partnership with UCLA Film & Television Archive in 2009.
