Description:

Shades of Fern, the only major prose work by surrealist painter Josef Capek, echoes the philosophical fairy tales of his brother, Karel Capek, the renowned Czech novelist and playwright. Two young poachers kill a gamekeeper and flee into a forest, their fear and guilt intensifying as the woods become increasingly menacing. Inspired by Czech folk tales, this contemporary story explores the connection between humanity and nature, crime and consequences, isolation and community, and the enduring power of guilt and memory.
