Description:
In northern California, Colonel Ferris, a wealthy farmer, fiercely opposes hydraulic mining, a destructive technique from the 1870s that's ruining the region's farmland. Though Ferris is politically opposed to mining, Jared Whitney, an engineer from the East, befriends Ferris' son Lance and falls for his daughter Serena. Family conflicts intensify when Ferris' brother Ralph abandons farming for work in San Francisco with his wife's father, Harrison McCooey, a key figure in the mining operation. When Lance follows Ralph, Colonel Ferris, directing his anger at Jared, forbids him from seeing Serena.
