Description:
Following his father's death, Dib, his mother, and younger brother relocate from Quneitra to Damascus. Their grandfather, a man known for his harshness, reluctantly offers them a home and attempts to arrange a marriage for his daughter. The allure of Damascus captivates Dib, who becomes consumed with uncovering the city's secrets. Yet, his dreams are overshadowed by a pervasive sense of humiliation and cruelty. As he matures amidst the political turmoil of the 1950s – including the end of Syria's military dictatorship, the Suez Canal nationalization, Nasser's rise in Egypt, and the brief union of Egypt and Syria – Dib's youthful optimism is shattered by violence and hardship, transforming the city's promise into a terrifying reality.
